Top Tip – Tile Tap Test

This is a simple and effective test that we commonly use to investigate areas of tiles that are at risk of debonding from the pool wall or floor. Tiles may become debonded for a number of reasons such as thermal shock, structural movement etc. The breakdown of the tile bonding leaves hollow spaces that increases the risk of tiles blowing but also allows them to be identified. As simple as it sounds using a hard blunt object, tiles that produce a dull sound when tapped provide a strong indication of breakdown of the bonds securing the tiles. Single tiles may sound hollow without affecting the integrity of the tiling system, however adjacent tiles that produce a hollow sound can give an early indication of potential tiling problems.
