Underwater lights are high on the list of problems we encounter whilst carrying out pool maintenance. Installed as enhancing and attractive pool features, when things go wrong they can unfortunately be tricky and expensive to repair.
A common problem, and one that we came across in a West Country leisure centre this month, is the build-up of stagnant water in lights that may have been redundant for several years. Failure of the fixings allows ingress of water, build up of debris and the possibility of water travelling along the electricity supply conduit and causing damage to the fabric of the pool. Lights in this condition are also an unsightly blemish and off-putting for swimmers.
Replacing lighting is an expensive operation requiring the pool to be drained down below the level of the power supply before a new installation can begin. CSD have a cost-effective solution to the problem that we put into effect in the West Country.
Our divers blanked off the redundant lights without the need to drain down the pool. The existing light fitting was completely removed and all debris and build-up was cleaned away. The already isolated power cable was securely sealed off to prevent any water seepage and an HDPE blank secured over the lighting niche. The specially designed blanks have bevelled edges for safety, and are slatted to allow free movement of water in and out of the lighting niche – thus eliminating the possibility of stagnant water build up.
